This park was completely new to all of us. It is just about an hour’s drive from Columbia, so we set out on a beautiful November morning headed east on I-20, passing cotton fields that were in the process of being harvested.
Lee State Park, just like Sesqui and Table Rock, was built back following the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). These guys who built the parks were able to have jobs, and afterwards, everyone had an area to enjoy the great outdoors. I’m sure some recreation was needed after these hard times.
One of the defining features of Lee are the artesian wells. We learned that they drilled down into the underground aquifers, and the change in pressure from underground to the surface allows the water to flow freely. The girls greatly enjoyed drinking and washing their face.
So, if you’re headed out past Columbia and headed to the Florence/Myrtle Beach area, Lee State Park is right off of the interstate and is worth a visit!
