My mom (whom the kids call Bunny) lives up above Walhalla, the county seat of Oconee County. From her house, it’s a quick 15-min. drive up to Oconee State Park. Bunny had gifted Teagan a Junior Ranger vest for Christmas, so we had to go try it out.
This is another CCC park, and in front of the park office, there was a statue dedicated to all those who gave their time to building these parks that we enjoy even today.
It turns out that I didn’t get a ton of pictures from our visit here, but we saw the lake and the original waterwheel that the CCC used for power. We were going to hike around the lake, but recent rains had flooded part of the trail, so we turned out. Walking by the boathouse, it transports you back in time, imagining those from decades ago out enjoying a pleasant afternoon.
Teagan enjoyed scoping out the mini golf course, and we played on the playground for a bit. There was also a historical marker talking about the Cherokee that inhabited the area centuries ago.
Though our trip was short, we had to get back to Bunny’s house to enjoy our Christmas visit. This is also the park where the seniors at our school take their senior trip, so whether with family or with school, I know we’ll be back.
