One of the closest parks to us here in Columbia, Dreher Island is the only current state park located on Lake Murray. As I was typing this post, I did a quick search on the history of the lake. The lake was created in the late 1920s and, like many other man-made lakes here in SC, there are plenty of abandoned towns, buildings, graves, etc. submerged under the water. (Source)

I had been out to Dreher Island about 10 years ago with some buddies, where we spent a night or two camping. Today’s trip, however, was just a nice morning visit to enjoy the beautiful late summer/early fall weather.
We found a couple of playgrounds at first, then enjoyed part of the Little Gap Trail. The trail itself was over two miles long, so we only went far enough to find a geocache, as we aren’t quite ready to take the three-year-old on that long of a hike yet.

After finding the geocache, we stood on the lakeshore for a bit before heading back to the car.
This is a great place to camp, and judging by the number of trailers, apparently many boaters utilize the ramps as well. While we weren’t able to go in or on the lake, it was nice to have the lake as a backdrop to our morning adventures.
Twenty state parks down! Where should we go next?
