Just to the northwest of Charleston lies a series of three state parks in fairly close proximity. Ever since discovering the state park system, I was looking forward to visiting these three in a row. Finally, this Sunday afternoon, we took the afternoon to drive down, meet up with our friend Stephanie (who kept Sage as a baby), and discover what these parks offered.
Our first stop was to Colleton State Park, the smallest park at only 35 acres. It serves primarily as access to the Edisto River, which is North America’s longest free-flowing (meaning not dammed anywhere) blackwater river.

It seems like many people will bring their RV here to camp, and I imagine that if they also have canoes/kayaks, it would make for a nice weekend. We didn’t spend a lot of time here, even bypassing the playground since we had two other parks to visit. The main thing we did was walk the short trail, which went through some pine forest, by cypress trees, and to the river. We found a geocache as well. There is a big open field, which would make for a nice kickball game.

Overall, if you’re in the area, this would be a nice place to get away. Click below for a few more pictures of our time there. Next stop? Givhans Ferry State Park, a 15 minute car ride, or an 8-hour canoe ride down the Edisto. We opted for the former. 🙂
